Square Rugs

Square rugs solve a problem rectangles cannot: a square room, a square entry hall, or a round dining table that a rectangle leaves awkwardly exposed at the corners.

It is a small collection, because square is a small share of what any mill weaves. Most of what is here is hand-knotted wool, which is partly why — squares are more often made to order by hand than run off a loom in volume.

Under a round table, choose a square that clears the table edge by about 24 inches on every side so chairs stay on when pulled out. In a square room, leave an even margin of bare floor all round; the symmetry is the whole point, and an off-center square reads as a mistake in a way an off-center rectangle does not.
