9x12 Area Rugs

A 9' x 12' rug is for a large living room, a primary bedroom, or a dining room with a table that seats eight. At this size every piece of furniture in the arrangement can sit fully on the rug, which is what makes a room feel finished rather than assembled.

The range runs wide. There are power-loomed polypropylene and polyester rugs built to take a family and a dog, and there are hand-knotted wool pieces meant to outlast the room they go in. Filter by weave if you already know which side of that line you are on; the price difference between them is large and entirely explained by how they are made.

For a dining room, the rule that matters is that chairs stay on the rug when pulled out, which needs about 24 inches of rug beyond the table edge on every side. For a living room, leave 18 to 24 inches of bare floor at the walls. If your space is bigger than roughly 15' x 18', look at 10x14 instead.
