Blue Rugs

Blue covers more ground in rugs than any other color: the deep indigo of a Persian medallion, the faded denim of a vintage-wash piece, soft sky in a modern abstract, and near-teal in a flat weave. This collection holds all of it, in roughly equal parts wool and synthetic.

Traditional blues and modern blues behave differently in a room. A hand-knotted indigo rug with an ivory field reads formal and tends to anchor a room on its own. A low-pile modern blue reads quiet and sits better under a lot of pattern elsewhere. About a fifth of what is here is hand-knotted; the rest is power-loomed, and the weave filter separates them.

Blue is also the most forgiving color for a room with strong natural light, because it does not yellow the way ivory and beige can against afternoon sun.
