Red Rugs

Red is the traditional rug color, and this collection reflects that: about three-quarters of it is traditional in pattern, and roughly half is hand-knotted wool rather than machine-woven. If you are looking for the classic madder-red field with an ivory or navy border, this is the right page.

Red wears exceptionally well. The dye is deep in the fiber rather than printed on it, so a hand-knotted red rug fades slowly and evenly rather than patchily, and the pattern hides everyday soil better than almost any other color. It is the reason red rugs survived a century of being walked on in hallways and dining rooms.

It is a committing color. Red sets the temperature of a room, so it works best where you want the floor to lead rather than recede. In a dining room, it is unusually practical — the pattern forgives what gets dropped.
