Polypropylene Rugs

Polypropylene is the workhorse synthetic, and for the rooms it suits there is nothing better at the price. It does not absorb water, which means it does not hold mildew or stain the way a natural fiber does. A spill sits on the surface long enough to be blotted. You can take most of these outside and hose them down.

Essentially all of it is power-loomed, which is what keeps it affordable and also what makes it dense enough to take a hallway. The color is locked into the fiber rather than printed on the surface, so sun fades it slowly rather than bleaching it in a season.

This is the right material for an entry, a kitchen, a mudroom, a covered patio, a rental, or any room with a dog and a schedule. It is the wrong material for a formal room where you want depth underfoot — wool does that, and this does not pretend to.
