Dining Room Rugs

A dining room rug has one job that overrides taste: chairs must stay on it when they are pulled out. Measure your table, add 24 inches on every side, and buy the size that covers it. Every rug on this page is available in 8x10, the size that covers most dining tables — and many are made in 9x12 as well if your room or table runs long.

After size, pile height decides whether you will be happy. A low pile or flat weave lets chair legs slide instead of catching, and lets crumbs shake out rather than bed in. Deep and shaggy piles look wonderful and are miserable under a dining table.

Material is the other honest trade. There is a lot of hand-knotted wool here, and wool genuinely does resist staining better than people expect because the fiber holds a natural lanolin. But if your dining room is where a young family actually eats, a dense power-loomed polypropylene will take more punishment and cost less to be relaxed about.
